Area activities

Cajarc is located in the Lot valley, which is located east of Dordogne and 1 hour 45 mins north of Toulouse. The town is located on the eastern edge of the Parc Naturel Régional des Causses du Quercy.

Cajarc was once the home of Georges Pompidou, a former President of France who had the landmark, Pompidou Centre in Paris, named in his honour. His former house in the town is now an arts centre (Maison des Arts Georges and Claude Pompidou). The town developed rapidly in the Middle Ages due to its location on a river trade route. The area around the port (where this house is located) was the commercial hub of the town, with many warehouses and artisan workshops. Higher up in the town, the Merchants built many impressive Mansion houses. International trade also brought the Saffron spice to the area from Greece. Saffron Crocuses are still grown in the area and harvested during October and November. During the 19th Century, the area became an important phosphate mining centre, bringing additional propserity to the town

Cajarc has a population of just over 1,000 people, but despite its small size, it has several restaurants, cafes, bakeries, butchers, and a general store. There´s an outdoor market twice weekly with fresh produce and regional products.

  • Monticule festival (June)
  • Ecaussesystême music festival (July)
  • Cahors Blues festival (July)
  • Africajarc - a four-day festival of contemporary African music and culture (July)
  • La BD prend l´air (September)

Cajarc was also an important pilgrims centre. The town is located on the St. James Trail, which crosses through southwest France on the way to Santiago de Compostela in Spain.
