A beautiful 3 bedroom stone built house, perched on a hilltop, overlooking the Cevennes mountains. This property is built within the grounds of a 15th Century Monastery, located up a winding lane close to the village of Molières-sur-Ceze. You will not be lost for company, there are other properties located nearby and the Owner has a house higher up on the hillside. So you can interact as much or as little as you like. But if you just enjoy being surrounded by nature, then you will have found your heaven here in the Cevennes. The house is available for long term rentals between October to April for €750 pcm + bills. The house is comfortably furnished and can accommodate up to 6 people.
The Cevennes region is a stunningly beautiful area of France, located on the South Eastern corner of the Massif Central. The Cevennes contains a varied landscape of rock mountains, dense chestnut forests and rivers. Despite the rural location, you are not totally cut off from civilization (although it may sometimes feel like that). The large town of Alès is 20 km away, the historic town of Uzès is 33 km and Nimes and Avignon are both 50 mins drive away. There is a TGV train station in both Nimes and Avignon, as well as local airports with low cost flights to the UK.
This long term rental house is located on an elevated position, above the old Monastery. At the front of the house there is a stone terrace where you can sit out and enjoy the views over a morning cup of coffee or an evening glass of wine. You enter into the spacious living room which contains the kitchen, dining area and lounge. The lounge comes with an inset fireplace, sofa and 2 armchairs. A large set of patio doors lead out to the terrace at the back of the house which is a really sunny spot. This terrace has a table and chairs and is perfect for enjoying your lunch outdoors. The dining area has a solid wooden table and 6 chairs.
The kitchen is simply furnished and comes with an electric oven, gas hob, fridge, microwave, kettle and coffee percolator. There is sufficient storage space and an adequate supply of pots, pans, plates and cutlery. More cooking utensils can be supplied if required.
There are 3 bedrooms. Bedroom 1 contains a King size double bed (160cm x 200cm). Bedroom contains a standard double bed (140cm x 200cm) and fitted wardrobe. Bedroom 3 is a twin bedroom. The bathroom comes equipped with a shower cubicle and wash basin. There is a separate toilet.
Outside: in the grounds of the Monastery there is a large heated swimming pool, an art trail through the woods and plenty of quiet areas where you can sit in the winter sun and admire the views. During the summer the Monastery operates as a holiday centre, but during the winter period it is tranquil.

Utility bills (electricity, water, firewood and internet) are not included in the rental price. The house can be rented for periods shorter than 3 months, although a higher rate will apply.

Last visited: Jan 2019. This stone-built house on a hillside in the Cevennes is the perfect spot if you are looking for a quiet and peaceful retreat in rural France. Inside, the house is simply furnished, but provides comfortable accommodation for a long stay. In the surrounding area you have some beautiful villages such as Lussan, Barjac and Saint Ambroix. Also nearby, you have the historic towns of Uzès and Anduze. Alès is not really my cup of tea, but it is OK for your weekly shopping and larger stores.

This Southern France house to rent long term is located in the North-Western corner of the Gard department of France, bordering the Ardeche and Lozere departments. This area of France is collectively known as The Cevennes and it is classified as a French National Park. The surrounding area is largely unspoiled and provides breathtaking scenery. The region first came to international prominence through the work of the Scottish writer, Robert Louis Stephenson. In 1879 he published his book "Travels with a Donkey in the Cévennes", in which he describes his journey through the region and his many stays at the local monasteries.
The local villages of Molieres-sur-Ceze has a population of around 1,500 people and is surrounded by dense forest and was a former mining village. Today the village is a popular place for holidaymakers looking to explore the local countryside on bike or on foot. The local area has some of the best cycling routes and hiling trails in France.
Popular local activities include canoeing in the local river (River Cèze) and an extensive tree-climbing centre which takes you through the canopy of the local forest. This is located just 500m from the house.
The nearest large town is Alès which is just a short drive away. Alès was historically a mining town, as well as an important centre for silk weaving. The town became an important refuge for French Protestants (Huguenots) during the 16th Century. The town contains a lot of shops, larger supermarkets, restaurants, banks, DIY stores and services for the region. I wouldn´t necessarily describe Alès as a pretty town. It is funtional rather than beautiful. But you don´t come to this area for Alès alone.
Nearby, you have some of the prettiest towns and villages in France. Uzès and Anduze are both 20 minutes away and nearby you will find the beautiful villages of Barjac, Lussan and La Rouque-sur-Cèze.

There is a TGV train station in both Avignon and Nimes. There are local rail connections from Nimes to Alès and a local bus service runs in between Alès and Molieres-sur-Ceze.
