Clos des Jacobins is perched on top of a hillside that plunges down towards the Dordogne river. It benefits from an exceptional location. The 8.5 hectares of Clos des Jacobins wine estate are located at the entrance to the medieval town of Saint-Émilion. Wines have been produced on the estate since the 17th century and the wines have been awarded the Grand Cru Classé since their inception. The vines, aged 30 years on average, are set in a mixture of limestone and clay soil which benefits from the sediment erosion of the limestone plateau above Saint-Emilion. This location, combined with the southern exposure, constitutes a unique terroir for producing wines.
Clos des Jacobins owes its name to the Benedictine monks who were named 'Jacobins' in reference to the name of the convent in Paris (Saint-Jacques) where the monks originated. The Jacobins used the farm's buildings to welcome pilgrims and the wines they cultivate was their main source of income.
