Saint-Gervais-les-Bains is a charming old Alpine Spa town with a permanent population of 6,000 people, situated in the Haute-Savoie department in south-eastern France. The town lies in the heart of the French Alps, close to the border of Italy and Switzerland and is a famous starting point for the ascent up the Mont Blanc mountain.
The town grew in size in the early 1900s, as visitors were attracted to the local thermal springs to treat respiratory conditions and ailments. As a result, many hotels and guest houses were built in the town, often in the local Alpine-style of building. Saint Gervais retains many of these old buildings, which lends the town a lovely character (in contrast to some of the more modern Ski resort towns in the area). "Les Thermes Mont Blanc" is the most famous spa resort in the Alps (on account of its association with the L'Oréal brand) and the Spas in Saint Gervais remain the second most important centre in Europe for the aqua-treatment of dermatological conditions.
The growth in popularity of winter sports, led to a further development of Saint Gervais and the town is part of the Evasion Mont-Blanc ski centre, the third biggest ski resort in France with a total of 445 km of ski runs.
The summer season in Saint-Gervais is equally as popular, drawing visitors for the Alpine air and to enjoy a variety of outdoor activities such as hiking, kayaking, white water rafting, mountain biking, climbing, and paragliding. Although the town is busy all year around, it is not over-run with tourists (there are just 19 hotels in the town with around 300 beds). But the influx of visitors does mean that St Gervais has a better range of restaurants, shops, sports facilities and services, than many towns of a similar size lack.
There is a TGV train station in Chambery (with services to Lyon and Paris). There are local train services from Chambery to St-Gervais (arriving at the Saint-Gervais-les-Bains-Le-Fayet train station, just 10 mins from the centre of town).
There is also a local tram which departs the centre of Saint Gervais and travels up to the Eagle's Nest viewing point on the Mont Blanc mountain. Saint Gervais is also the starting point for a narrow gauge railway which travels across to Chamonix and on to the town of Martigny on the Swiss border.
To reach Saint-Gervais-les-Bains, you can fly to the following airports:
Saint-Gervais-les-Bains is located in south-eastern France on the border of Italy and Switzerland. The town is 1 hour south-east of Geneva and 2 hours east of Lyon. The city of Annecy is 1 hour to the west.
The A40 motorway, which connects Lyon and Geneva to Paris is just 10-15 mins drive from St Gervais.
One month deposit to be paid at time of reservation (which will become your security deposit during your stay). Rent to be paid on the 1st day of each month.
