Trausse is a rural village, so a car will be essential.
Trausse-Minervois is an active village with a population of around 600 people. The village was once part of the province controlled by the Count Trencavel, a leader of the Cathar movement in Southern France. The Count came to an unfortunate end, after Simon de Montfort brought the Albigensian Crusade to the region to crush the Cathar movement (under the orders of the French King and the Pope in Rome). Today there still remains the remnants of the old chateau (Tour Trencavel) and the nearby chapel of Saint Roch.
The village has a number of streets named after local heroes, such as the leaders of the Wine Growers revolt in 1907, which spread like wildfire across the Languedoc region. You will also find rue du Maquis, named in homage to the local resistance fighters during the German occupation.
Trausse has attracted a number international inhabitants from Sweden, Australia, Portugal, Ireland, America and the UK; and visitors always comment on how friendly and welcoming the village is.
In the village there is a weekly market, an excellent local restaurant, a shop and a hairdresser. Everywhere you go, you will see vineyards and wine-making activities. The next village along is called Caunes-Minervois, and features and excellent restaurant. The local town of Olonzac features an excellent market (Tuesdays), which takes over the whole of the centre of the town. You will also find some excellent vineyards in the surrounding area, one of which produces a wine which was voted the best wine in the World (in 2011).
Trausse is located on the edge of the Haut Languedoc Regional Park, an area of outstanding natural beauty.
There is a train station in Carcassonne with regional train services to Toulouse and Narbonne (where you can catch the TGV train services).
The local airport at Carcassonne features regular flights to Ireland (Cork and Dublin) and the UK (East Midlands, Edinburgh, Stansted and Manchester). Other local airports include:
Toulouse (1 hour 10 mins)
Beziers (1 hour)
Perpignan (1 hour)
Montpellier (1 hour 15 mins)
Trausse is located on the D115 which runs from the town of Olonzac to Caunes-Minervois. Carcassonne is 25 mins drive from Trausse and the A61 motorway can be reached in 30 mins. Toulouse is 1 hour 15 mins away and the Mediterranean coast is 50 mins drive.
